چکیده

The spatial resolution of an optical device is generally characterized by either the Point Spread Function (PSF) or the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF). To directly obtain the PSF one needs to measure the response of an optical system to a point light source. We present data that show the response of a back-illuminated CCD to light emitted from a sub-micron diameter glass ber tip. The potential well in back-illuminated CCD's does not reach all the way to the back surface. Hence, light that is absorbed in the eld-free region generates electrons that can di use into other pixels. We analyzed the di usion of electrons into neighboring pixels for di erent wavelengths of light ranging from blue to near infrared. To nd out how the charge spreading into other pixels depends on the location of the light spot, the ber tip could be moved with a piezo-electric translation stage. The experimental data are compared to Monte Carlo simulations and an analytical model of electron di usion in the eld-free region.

Relative detection efficiency of back- and front-illuminated charge-coupled device cameras for X-rays between 1 keV and 18 keV.

High-resolution x-ray measurements were performed with a von Hamos-type bent crystal spectrometer using for the detection of the diffracted photons either a back-illuminated charge-coupled device (CCD) camera or a front-illuminated one. For each CCD the main x-ray emission lines (e.g., Kalpha, Kbeta, Lalpha, and Lbeta) of a variety of elements were measured in order to probe the performances of...

CCD QE in the Soft X-ray Range

e2v has previously provided back-illuminated CCDs for several solar observation projects, resulting in a number of key articles on CCD QE in the soft X-ray region. To update these, e2v has arranged for tests on X-ray optimised EMCCDs at a synchrotron. These have shown QE of at least 45% from 40 eV to 2000 eV, with Enhanced process devices having significantly higher QE than Basic process. The m...

The front-illuminated (FI) CCDs in the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) on the Chandra X-ray Observatory (Chandra) were damaged in the extreme environment of the Earth’s radiation belts, causing charge traps that result in enhanced charge transfer inefficiency (CTI) during parallel readout. This causes row-dependent gain, event grade ‘morphing’ (spatial redistribution of charge) and ene...

Thinned Charge Coupled Devices with Flat Focal Planes for UV Imaging

A versatile post-fabrication process to produce thinned, flat, back-illuminated CCDs is being developed at Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Microdevices Laboratory. This technique is compatible with many ultraviolet enhancement treatments and has been demonstrated with the delta doping process. The significance of this demonstration is that thinned, robust, and flat CCDs are produced without the use...

The QUEST Large Area CCD Camera

We have designed, constructed, and put into operation a very large area CCD camera that covers the field of view of the 1.2 m Samuel Oschin Schmidt Telescope at the Palomar Observatory. The camera consists of 112 CCDs arranged in a mosaic of four rows with 28 CCDs each. The CCDs are pixel Sarnoff 600 # 2400 thinned, back-illuminated devices with pixels. The camera covers an area of on the 13 mm...
